Before a soccer tournament, my-then 10-year-old daughter, Ann Caroline, and I watched "Dare to Dream," the documentary on the 1999 World Cup winning team. In it the principle players, Joy Fawcett, Mia Hamm, Brandi Chastain, Julie Foudy, say, ad nauseum, how they are there for the kids.

The next day, at UC Irvine, another team dad and I ran into Joy Fawcett. We asked nicely, but Joy refused to simply say hello to our daughters.

A woman who gave a soccer lesson to A.C. who had practiced against that '99 team had the same disappointing experience with Mia Hamm.*

Something tells me this World Cup winning team will be far less hypocritical.

*My daughter and I could not have had a more positive experience with '99 team member Shannon McMillian.
